I can’t go so far as to say that I was obsessed with last month’s royal wedding, but I certainly was captivated by it–the story, the royalty, the magic, the dress, just the anticipation of it all was exciting.  What  I wasn’t anticipating, however, was the hats!  Oh, the glorious hats!  I kept fast-forwarding, pausing, rewinding, pausing to make sure that I got a glimpse of as many as I could.  I think it’s just cool to be able to wear a piece like this and look good doing it.

The British women, Princess Kate, and the royal wedding guests inspired me to create something akin to their fascinators, although slightly less daring.  I wanted something that women and girls could wear on more of a daily basis.  Don’t get me wrong, if I’m ever invited to a royal wedding, I will be bold and daring, but for now, I need to keep it toned down for playdates, Target and the occasional date night.  And with that, I introduce the mini fascinators!  These are just a few of the pieces that are really fun to wear.

This headband is a special request for a young lady that works at TGIFriday’s. She wanted red and black to match her uniform.
Talk about flair!

I broke out the organza, lace and jewels for this one!

Studio Night as I know it was born in my sister’s art studio in Memphis.  She dedicates each Tuesday to her art and art-related business no matter what.  I’m pretty sure she allows herself to make art whenever she feels like it, but I know for a fact that she makes it on Tuesdays.  In another studio in Memphis, I have a friend who adopted this concept of Studio Night and spends her Tuesdays making jewelry.

I decided I needed to get myself one of these Studio Nights!

I like the idea of not feeling pressured to create while Bear is napping or while The Bean is at school.  While I may use that time work on my headbands, I find comfort knowing that each week I have set aside my Tuesday evening for the sole purpose of making things.

This Studio Night is brought to you by my grand idea to donate headbands for The Bean’s school Easter raffle.

I worked on a special order for one of my best customers!  She was one of the first people to buy my headbands from seeing them posted on my Facebook page, and she kept me very busy at Christmas.  I’m so happy to have her support.  Those purple ones, by the way, are in the beginning stages.  They will soon be the “Birds are the New Black.”

I also spent a little time researching some new materials and techniques that I’m so excited to try.  The problem with researching is that I see something I want to do, and I want to do it right that very second.  Unfortunately, I very rarely have all the needed materials and/or time.  At least I know for sure that I’ll have it next Tuesday…

The Bean is my muse.  I absolutely love the way a headband frames a face–especially hers.

She has been blessed with perfect freckles, big eyes, a very bright smile, and a personality that is beyond belief.  With all that good fortune, it’s hard to notice that her hair tends to be thin and falls out very easily.  We were told to handle it as little as possible and that, with time, she will outgrow this stage.

I avoid putting anything in her hair that could pull it out easily.  This means no ponytails, braids, barrettes and bows, but sometimes a little girl just needs some flair in that hair.

This is where the headbands come in.

I felt that they offered barely any traction or pull, but they were able to add a  little pop of color and frame that sweet little face.  Thus began my foray into the making of the headbands!

Thank you for visiting The Bean And Bear! Click here to learn about our little shop.

The Bean And Bear is inspired by my children–both the name of my shop and my drive to be creative.  I found it appropriate to name my headband and accessory business after my children because that seems like something people do.  You have kids and then you name either your company or your private yacht after them.

I am inspired by these children in my everyday life, not only to make unique projects, but also to make healthy food, to make responsible decisions, and (if we’re being honest) to have a meltdown or two.  Everything I do is for or because of them and so I name my store in their honor…The Bean And Bear.

Harper was born first, and although I’ve never been one for terms of endearment or nicknames, I couldn’t help but call her little “Harper Bean” the very first time I held her.  It just came so naturally.

Almost 3 years later, I was in the hospital with Charlie when I started calling him “Bear.”  Again, it just fit.

I love these names for my children for a variety of reasons; they are dear to me.  But I must admit that I also love the fact that they have the same amount of letters, three of which are the same, and they both begin with B.  Did I mention my slight inclination toward obsessive compulsiveness?  I think the attention to detail it affords me is quite beneficial when creating pieces for my little shop.

It’s no yacht, but this little shop is born from the inspiration and motivation that I get from the Bean and Bear.
